All about Wifi and watts.
A truck don’t drive without fuel, and your Watts system doesn’t dazzle without good strong WiFi.
When Internet Service Providers set up internet in your home with a wireless router, they don’t typically take into account the quality of your wireless network outside, or in your garage, which are the common places we install Watts controller boxes, and this can lead to customer disappointment on install day, when the system is there and ready to go, but your home network isn’t talking nicely to it.
Measuring Wi-Fi signal strength is an essential step to ensure a reliable connection of your Permanent Smart Lights Controller to the Internet. It helps determine whether there is a strong Wi-Fi signal in the location where you plan to have us place the controller. Typically, the installation location for the controller is a garage or a wall near an outdoor outlet. Looking at the number of bars on the WiFi symbol on your phone is not a good enough measurement to predict performance. To understand if your WiFi is up to the task it is important to get a decibel reading. Note that a good signal strength is indicated by values of -59 dB and above, where -30 dB is considered very strong, and -65 dB is weak.
If the signal is weak in all possible controller placement locations, consider using a Wi-Fi booster to improve the Wi-Fi signal in that area for reliable operation of the Permanent Smart Lights Controller.
Step 1: Prepare for Measurement
Before you start measuring Wi-Fi signal strength, you’ll need:
- A smartphone or tablet where you can install a Wi-Fi analysis app.
- Access to the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to.
Step 2 for Android: How to Test Your Wi-Fi Strength
- Open your Google Play Store.
2. Search “Wi-Fi Analyzer.”
3. Tap on the application with a green icon.
4. Install the application.
5. Open the application.
6. Allow all permissions that Wi-Fi Analyzer requests.
7. Find your Wi-Fi network in the list of available access points and check the signal strength.
Step 2 for Iphone: How to Test Your Wi-Fi Strength
1. Go to the App Store and download and install the AirPort Utility App.
2. Open “Settings” and expand the “AirPort Utility” dropdown menu.
3. Turn on the “Wi-Fi Scanner” toggle switch.
4. Launch the AirPort Utility App and tap on “Wi-Fi Scan” in the top-right corner of the screen.
5. Tap on “Scan” and select the Wi-Fi network you want to view.
6. Note the dBm value listed under the “RSSI” value. That’s your Wi-Fi signal strength.
7. Tap “Done” to exit the app.
